Tuesday Training Byte: Problems with a puppy for Christmas

Many dog breeds live upwards of 12 to 15 years. If you think about it, that is a long-term commitment. If you are planning to give a puppy to someone for Christmas, it would be better to give them a gift card so they can pick out the dog themselves after the rush of the holidays. And what may seem like the perfect gift, the receiver may not be ready for the kind of responsibility and work a new puppy means. If you are sure the person really wants to add a new furry member, perhaps let them pick it out themselves and consider an adult or senior dog. Between housebreaking and chewing, the puppy stage can last up to a year and a half, and is a LOT of work. Most states have laws against selling or giving away a puppy prior to 8 weeks of age. Be aware that a fear stage occurs during the 9th week, so it is important to have a quiet and settled environment/schedule for the pup at this age. If you are buying from a reputable breeder, ask for them to board the puppy for a couple of weeks to get him past the fear stage and give you time to put away your Christmas tree, potentially toxic plants and foods, and decorations that could be harmful. This could save you a good deal of frustration and provide a smoother transition for your new friend. If the person does end up getting a puppy, consider paying for a puppy training class or share the cost with others. This would also make a great Valentine's Day gift and at a perfect time for a young puppy. You can find an AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy trainer.
