Tuesday Training Byte: Adopting an adult/older dog

Did you acquire a dog that was already an adult or older dog? Many times we don't know the dog's history, especially if it was a stray. Whenever you get a new dog, it can take months to adjust. This is especially true of older dogs that have experienced trauma or neglect. The new environment may be very different from their former life and even though good, it can be overwhelming to them. It is helpful to have a bed or crate for them in an area away from the traffic pattern in your home. A quiet, private area where they can relax and not be bothered. To begin building trust, try sitting near their bed on the floor and hand feeding them some kibble or small treats. They will soon learn that close contact with you is associated with pleasant things.
